People First Development
Coralville is known for its bold development projects. These exciting new spaces may draw in new business, but they often threaten to displace families who wish to live in Coralville but can barely afford to do so. A People First Development plan will ensure that all future development benefits everyday Coralville residents, not just the well-resourced. This will include:
Investment in new and the protection of existing affordable housing.
Protecting renters by demanding accountability for landlords who violate fair housing and discrimination laws.
Fight to make Housing Choice/Section 8 voucher program enrollment a protected class.
Re-imagination of the Southeast Commercial District to prioritize affordable housing and minority-owned businesses.
Identifying new strategies for neighborhood outreach and including more voices in community development decision-making.
The right to nature: developing more public natural areas in accessible locations.
Future-focused strategies to accommodate changing needs for families and young professionals (ex: affordable high-speed internet for all, more shared work/meeting spaces, and affordable cultural and entertainment activities).
